    EMDR Therapy Intensives

    Brief.  Accelerated.  Effective.

The EMDR Therapy Intensive format is becoming an increasingly popular option for trauma focused psychotherapy and is being recognize more and more as a state-of-the-art model for trauma therapy.  A departure from the standard approach to EMDR, the intensive format can be an efficient and effective option for the motivated client who is ready to really dig in.

Benefits of the intensive format can include:

    • More rapid symptom relief as compared to standard approaches to EMDR
    • Reduced disruption to work, school, or family schedules
    • Reduced cost – While there can be a larger upfront cost, the shorter duration of treatment can reduce the over all cost of care.
    • Avoiding long waitlists for ongoing care, while still accessing quality treatment with an expert provider
    • Access to excellent treatment for out-of-town or out-of-state clients
    • Minimizing transportation issues or childcare complications that often arise in ongoing therapy

Below are some commonly asked questions about this unique approach to healing and recovery.  Click through the topics to find out if an EMDR Intensive if right for you.

What is an EMDR Therapy Intensive?

EMDR Therapy is typically delivered in the context of ongoing psychotherapy, however there are times when a more intensive or condensed period of treatment can be beneficial.  Complicated schedules, access to specialized providers, and special circumstances can call for this type of modified treatment plan. While it is not the standard approach, research shows intensive therapy for trauma and acute stress can be effective in symptom reduction.

In an EMDR Intensive format, clients receive multiple EMDR sessions condensed into 3-4 hour blocks of time.  The entire process typically amounts to one, two, or three intensive sessions, though this can vary depending on a number of factors including previous treatment, goal for intensive treatment, and individual reprocessing outcomes.

Who provides EMDR Intensives and how are they trained?

In general, EMDR Therapy requires clinicians to have completed detailed training in EMDR methods, with more advanced training and credentialing as options for more focused or specialized practice.  There is a wide spectrum of clinical use of EMDR treatment methods, ranging from basic techniques integrated into traditional talk therapy to strict protocol-driven “purist” approaches.  In the context of EMDR Intensives, it is advisable to work with a clinician whose primary model of treatment is EMDR.

Leah Fogt completed EMDR Therapy foundational training with the Institute for Creative Mindfulness, based out of Warren, Ohio, an EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) accredited training program.  She is also Certified with EMDRIA and works as an Approved Consultant to help novice EMDR therapists complete the training and/or certification processes.

    Is it right for me?

EMDR Therapy Intensives are beneficial in healing from many types of traumas and stressors, however they may not be the best choice for every individual.  The presence of a solid therapeutic relationship is necessary for EMDR Therapy to be effective, regardless of session format.  For this reason, clients who are new to their provider may be asked to attend a session prior to their intensive for orientation, assessment, and planning purposes.

Some clients will do better with an ongoing therapeutic relationship, particularly clients who struggle with complex trauma histories or certain mental health disorders.

The ideal candidates for EMDR Therapy Intensives are:

    • Looking to recover from a single stressful or traumatic event
    • Sober
    • Equipped with healthy and effective coping skills which are used on a regular basis
    • Able to access a reliable support network as needed
    • Motivated for accelerated therapeutic experience

Your provider will help you determine if this type of treatment is a good choice for your specific needs.

    What should I expect?

EMDR Therapy Intensives will include the same key components of the standard protocols manualized by Francine Shapiro, Ph. D. but with modifications.

Treatment begins with assessment and preparation work, which may include use of questionnaires and interview.  Another important aspect of preparation includes the development and practice of self-calming resources. Next, your therapist will take you through protocols to reprocess traumatic memories emphasizing desensitization (essentially “it doesn’t hurt as bad anymore”) and installation of positive beliefs (essentially “I think about myself in a healthier way now”). The final phase focuses on integrating adaptive thinking to future scenarios.

Your provider will collaborate with you to lay out a plan that balances clinical efficacy with your comfort, safety, and priorities.

Are EMDR Intensives covered by insurance?

EMDR Therapy Intensives are typically not entirely covered by insurance, though assessment and follow up appointments often times are.  Deductibles, co-insurance, and co-pays may apply depending on your plan.

Prior to your intensive, support staff will explore coverage options and clarify your estimated out-of-pocket expense.  Full self-pay fees range from $120-180 per hour depending on service.

Are EMDR Intensives done in-person or by teletherapy?

In general, it is preferable for EMDR Intensives to be conducted in-person, however, circumstances may be appropriate for planning sessions and/or follow-up appointments to be completed by teletherapy.

How to do I arrange for an EMDR Intensive?

If you are a current client with the practice simply ask about it in your next appointment.  It’s that easy!

New clients can initiate the process by either contacting the office at 513-217-5221 or emailing Leah directly at Leah.fogt.lisw@gmail.com.  A free informal screening will be provided prior to your first service to rule out any factors contradicted with the Intensive format.
